Esther and Dakota soon found that arranging meetings with the people in Darcey’s list was a task in itself. As all busy people with hectic diaries and in powerful positions, arranging with their secretaries and assistants for them to spare a few minutes proved difficult indeed.

“I’ve had enough of this,” Dakota slammed down her mobile on the bench beside her. Esther was standing nearby, looking up to the gendarme’s office where the Director General was currently located.

“They’re not going to talk to us very willingly,” Esther sighed.

“Then we’ll make them,” Dakota picked up the phone again.

“How?”

“We tell a lie.”

“What kind of lie?” Esther asked, raising her eyebrows as she looked back to Dakota.

“One that will make doors open for us,” Dakota said before turning on a business-like tone. “Hi there, I am Chief Inspector Dakota Ryder with the Avon and Somerset Constabulary Police in England. As a matter of urgency, I need to speak with Director General Alain Simon today.” She paused as someone on the other end of the phone said something. “It’s relating to a case in England, of national security.” Esther’s eyes widened in surprise. “It worked. We’re seeing him in half an hour,” Dakota passed over the phone. “Now, you’ll have to work your French skills to arrange meetings with the others.”

“What? No!” Esther jumped away, refusing to take the phone. “What if we get caught lying?”

“Then you’re in luck because you’d only be reported to your boss who is me. I’m hardly going to punish you for something I’m telling you to do. Am I?” She pushed the phone into Esther’s hands, who took it while shaking her head.

“Remind me again why I came to Paris to help you?” Esther muttered as she called the first number.

“Because you speak French and I don’t,” Dakota said simply.

“Hmm,” Esther mumbled in response.

Three phone calls later, and by lying, tricking and deceiving them all, Esther had booked them into meetings with every name on the list over the next two days.

Any progress they had made though seemed to evaporate in their first meeting with Director General Alain Simon. He was a tall man, wiry in structure with greying hair and big bold black framed glasses balanced on his nose. He stared at the two of them without so much as a glimpse of a smile as they entered his office.

“Rearranging my meetings for the sake of an English constabulary I hope you realize I do not take kindly to,” he said sharply. “Be quick with your questions.”

“Very well,” Dakota took the lead in the conversation. “Our investigation relates to a missing person you have here in Paris. Could you tell me, sir, if you have spoken with an
